Ruben Amorim's spell at Manchester United is considered by many to have been a notable letdown. By any measure, his record stands out for all the poor factors. During the modern top-flight period, no boss at the club has recorded fewer points per game, or secured a standing as poor as 15th place. Examining the archives, you have to return to the manager Frank O'Farrell in 1972 to find a Red Devils' gaffer who lost a greater proportion of matches. Furthermore, he notoriously etched his name in club lore by suffering a loss in a final to Spurs, particularly Postecoglou's side of Tottenham.
The game, however, is not often so black and white. Despite the scrutiny of his tactical approach, Amorim departs from a club in a far better position than the one he took over. In a prior match this term, following a defeat of Brighton, Welbeck reported that teammates were lauding United as the most impressive team they had encountered in some time. The football in a breathtaking four-all stalemate with Bournemouth was both promising and exhilarating.
Even though it is difficult to contest the termination—particularly given it was said to be triggered by his remarks regarding executives with poorer track records—Amorim's downfall was in the end hindered by atrocious luck. If injuries to key stars not occurred alongside the loss of other important individuals, he might still be in the job—possibly succeeding.
As a result, the interim boss Fletcher steps into a reasonably stable scenario. Important figures like Mount, Fernandes, and Mainoo are available again, while Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo will in the near future be back from the African tournament. Just prudent stewardship of this skilled roster is expected to be enough to secure a top-five finish and, with it, European football for the following term—in all likelihood in the prestigious UEFA Champions League.
Burnley, however, will not be a pushover. Despite boasting only a dozen points and suffering defeats in three of their last five outings, their performances have at times been better than the results indicate. Manager Scott Parker will certainly have his team revved up to get after the visitors who are set to field an lineup that has lacked cohesion, set up in a setup they have not used for over a year.
Match begins: 8:15 in the evening GMT.
