A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the year.

The successful offer for the 243kg fish came from the operator of a popular sushi chain, which runs locations domestically and abroad.

"The first tuna heralds a prosperous start," stated the company president, a familiar participant at the traditional new year's auction.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is famous for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Past

After the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the final price," noting, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."

This new acquisition surpasses his previous notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which announced the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.

The high-energy energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction ended.

"I sense like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so lucky as the year begins," shared one elated patron.
