A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 people sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and another man who ran away following the explosion was apprehended not long after. The trio have been taken to hospital.
The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene showed the building turned into a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.
The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the residence was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.
Mediators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander told the media.
A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister said.
The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
He thought the explosion had occurred on a floor above the access point and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told local news, adding that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
