El Kaabi's Breathtaking Strike Caps The Atlas Lions' Victory Against the Coelacanths in Afcon Opener.

Host nation Morocco overcame a jittery start to overcome their island opponents in the competition's first match on the weekend, with goals from the Real Madrid attacker and super-sub El Kaabi in the second half.

This constituted a far from convincing display, however, from the heavily tipped hosts, who are ranked 97 places above the tiny island nation in the world rankings and were forced to grind out for the points in rainy conditions at the national stadium.

Nervy Beginning and Spurned Chances

Morocco missed an early spot-kick and were goalless at the interval despite dominating the ball, eventually opening the scoring in the 11th minute of the second half.

The goal came when full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to prevent the ball from going out before laying it across for Díaz to calmly pass into the net.

“The opening game is invariably tough but we improved in the second period,” said manager Walid Regragui.

El Kaabi's Piece of Brilliance

The tension was subsequently eased by a piece of pure individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only ten minutes after coming on, the striker connected with a ball into the box with a spectacular bicycle kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the win.

Before that, the hosts might have taken ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was awarded for a challenge on Díaz. Yet, Soufiane Rahimi effort was saved by keeper Yannick Pandor.

The Visitors' Defiant Stand and Second-Half Opportunity

Comoros comfortably held their more illustrious opponents for long periods until the Moroccans' greater quality eventually told.

Shot-stopper Pandor made several further good stops to limit the score as the match progressed, although Comoros created a chance for an equalizer shortly after the first goal, with Rafiki Saïd shooting directly into keeper Bounou.

Injury Worry for Morocco

The victory was somewhat overshadowed by an apparent injury to Morocco's captain, Romain Saïss, who limped off after the first half apparently in tears.

The centre-back had only made his comeback to the national side recently following a lengthy absence due to ankle surgery.

This result continues the team's record-breaking run of successive victories to nineteen, surpassing the previous best of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
