Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also featured experts in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
