American Social Media Influencer Penalized After Mass Electric Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge

New South Wales police have levied a penalty against an American social media personality and handed out two driving violation citations for alleged negligent driving after a swarm of electric bicycle users converged on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on a weekday.

The Event: A Prohibited Ride

A group of around 40 people riding electric bikes and motorbikes travelled along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the downtown area and Haymarket.

"There was a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked NSW police assistant commissioner David Driver on the following day.

Law enforcement indicated they did not chase right away the group due to concerns for public safety but rather found the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.

Fines Imposed for Influencer

Later in the week, police announced they had served the American online personality known as the influencer, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), carrying a penalty of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, connected to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The influencer reportedly has more than 3.4m subscribers on one platform and over 1.2m on Instagram.

Creator's Response

The online figure spoke with a major newspaper recently after the incident spread rapidly on digital platforms, stating he was sorry for giving "bike life" a bad reputation.

"I accept the blame. That was one of the safest ride-outs I have witnessed," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to come here respecting the laws and norms of Sydney. When I decided to do a public meeting it did not involve a group ride, it was just to greet people under the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we reverse, basically, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."

National Debate on E-Bike Regulation

The spate of e-bikes on streets across the country has sparked increasing demands for stricter rules. The federal health minister, Mark Butler, commented that illegal ebikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Kids have done reckless acts on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are coming into our ERs are truly severe," he stated. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things coming into the country [and] officers are granted the powers to crack down, to take them away, to destroy them, to dispose of them."

The state recorded 226 injuries related to electric bikes in the previous year. But, in the first seven months of the following year, that number jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
