The winter break provide a multitude of pursuits considerably more enjoyable than scanning the headlines: discovering surprises, getting stuffed on delicious food, and using deep breathing to avoid arguing with family members. Hopefully you managed to enjoy all these things and more. However, the showbiz industry doesn't take a break, and this is notably true for the realm of anime. Numerous thrilling news items surfaced during the break, and just in case you overlooked a few, here is a compilation of the most exciting bits.
Truly the most surprising piece of news, the notorious controversial season that was season 3 of One-Punch Man proved insufficient to deter the series' continuation. Season 3 will return with a subsequent part in 2027—such a distant date they might as well have dubbed it season 4. Even more shocking, the studio J.C. Staff will still be at the helm. At least this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is attached to direct from the outset, which might be a hopeful indicator. Yet, the promotional image for the second cour is the same image the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou looking opposite ways. This suggests that, nowadays, they are probably mocking the fans.
Kyoto Animation has established a reputation for being an top-tier animation studio, distinguishing itself not just for the high caliber of its output but for the good working conditions of its employees—a uncommon practice in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had not adapted an anime adapted from a manga published in Shonen Jump, perhaps the most famous magazine in the business. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a great choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo became massive popularity when it launched in 2022 after just a handful of installments, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the author's health issues. When it resumed publication with a more relaxed pace, the series demonstrated it hadn't lost the fans' appreciation and positive sentiment, and now everyone is overjoyed about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the best-selling, long-running Shueisha manga that is aside from One Piece. If you've are unfamiliar with it before, it's because it only fairly recently obtained an English release, but the anime has been going on for a while, and season 6 was yet another stellar entry. It turns out that was just the first cour, because a "sequel" has been announced as currently being made, and it will very likely debut in 2026.
A further studio known for the excellent quality of its projects, Science Saru has brought us masterpieces of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, most recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be handling the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the actual historical person of Fatima, an prominent woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. From the trailer, the anime named Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a truly original and captivating visual style, which evokes Ranking of Kings. Debuting in July 2026, this one will absolutely be on my watchlist.
Shortly after the release of the final episode of the first season, it was confirmed that Tougen Anki will be getting a second season. Adapted from the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki brings to life the manga by Yura Urushibara. The new season of the anime will cover the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a firm release date has yet to be revealed.
